There was NOTHING good about HUMAN TRAFFICKING (i.e., enslavement). Ted James, and those who think like him, are insensitive about slavery because enslavement happened to the descendants of African Americans by his “forefathers.”

Oh Lord, the irony is strong with this one. "Guy pushing law stating racism/slavery are taught too much quickly defeats his own argument by displaying his own woefully deficient knowledge of that very topic that such education should have provided." Just... wow. On a positive though, I am *very* surprised that Rep Hilferty is a Republican. The capacity and willingness to call out and contradict those in the same party has become vanishingly rare in the Republican Party. Truly, I have great respect for you for having the integrity to do so.

Good and bad are relative and completely subjective. Likeminded people with the same subjective beliefs tend to create an environment that allows their once subjective views to become objective. By associating production value and infrastructure development to slavery you can see that some old economists and racist business folks would deem those as good parts of slavery because there is an objective metric to compare with being economic impact. This is probably what he is referring to but what else could he possibly be talking about?

Actually I think his comment just showed and unconscious level of "disregard" for the trauma of this thing called american slavery. A "disregard" not intended, but just not being able to empathize fully. That's one problem with too many in our society that prevents us from finding solutions to systematic racism, empathy.

Here people let me translate from "Asshole" language to "Humanity" language, for you all. Basically what the man is saying, we can learn and discuss anything, just as long as it does not upset the white kids in our class room. If we are for example discussing American history, and the topic is "Westward Expansion" we can discuss that it happened, but dont you dare mention Native Americans living on lands whites wanted, or how about how we gained all if not most of the South Western states, we can discuss those states but dont you dare discuss the war based on a lie and how we basically told Mexico if they did not let go of those territories we would take over Mexico. You guys know what i mean, anything that dulls the lie we have fed our children for years. Anyone who does not understand that notion that history is fluid, should never be writing policy dealing with education, never ever.

In my opinion, most "good/modern" things we have today or have produced over the centuries, have soul crushing levels of ugly hiding behind them. Modern society at large is still waiting on the redemption arc, but modern farming/meat packing, human rights violations the world over in manufacturing, and pollution are some of the big ones.. I believe in teaching in the opposite way. What I mean is we need to start examining modern problems from the ugly forward. If you showed kids across classrooms the world over the real cost of modern society it would be hard on them, but if you can get generation after generation wired to see the ugly, be equipped and empowered to reduce the ugly as much as possible, reduce some of the bad if possible, and maintain as much good as possible. I think we could see a change in the way the whole planet thinks. Not focus on the good things that come from places, then finally sometime later in the child's education address some of the ugly. As a kid this left me feeling guilty and unable to change things.

@El Cruzer I tend to try to be an optimist and not so pessimistic. I don't try and think the worst right off the bat about someone, kind of like what going on in our country right now with black folks. They don't want to be portrayed or perceived as something for the way they look, aND I don't blame them for that. Same situation applies here. I believe he meant well, and to not make it so "one sided" against white people. That creates division
